The Pugilist and the Ego

The Pugilist and the Ego

Dr Joe Dispenza | 09 July 2017

Even thus by the great sages 'tis confessed
The phoenix dies, and then is born again,
When it approaches its five-hundredth year;

- Dante, Inferno, Canto XXIV

According to Egyptian mythology, every 500 years the Phoenix self-immolates, meaning—it voluntarily lights itself on fire so that it may be reborn as a greater expression of itself. It’s for this reason why I chose the symbol of the Phoenix for our back-to-back June Advanced Workshops in Cancun, Mexico, and for this reason why I named the event “Transformation of Matter.” I wanted our students to focus on completely burning away the things that are no longer in alignment with the future they’re creating.

If you’re familiar with my work, then you’ve heard me say that 95% of who we are is a set of unconscious thoughts, automatic programs, repetitive habits, emotional reactions, and memorized behaviors. These routine programs affect us mentally, spiritually, physically, energetically, chemically, biologically, and genetically, and they serve to keep us stuck in the past (after all, the brain is a record of the past, and when we live by familiar feelings, the body lives in the past). When we’re entrenched in these life patterns, we might as well be a hamster on the proverbial wheel—and the only way to step off the wheel is to become aware you’re on it. In other words, the only mode to produce change is to bring conscious (awareness) to what we were unconscious to, and we do this by observing our thoughts, perceptions, behaviors, emotions, and actions.

To become a master of our thoughts and emotions (which is how we master our energy, which is how we master our environment, which is how we master our destiny), like the Phoenix we need to be able to sit in the discomfort of the fire. Sitting in the fire is both the process and the initiation, and for many it can be a very difficult and painful process. The body craves the past, and by using our will to overcome the safety and comfort of the past, the body goes through all sorts of transformations on a moment-to-moment basis. I can tell you from experience, there have been countless times during my meditations where I’ve felt like a pugilist backed into the corner of a ring, and my opponent—the insufferable voice in my head called the ego—delivers body blow after body blow. Its strategy is to not to land the knock-out punch, but rather to weaken and disable.

The metaphor of lighting the self on fire is sitting in the presence of that discomfort for a long enough period of time—continuously observing ourselves—until the ego tires itself out. Every time you win that round by becoming conscious of those unconscious thoughts, programs, behaviors, and attitudes, you are raising your energy—because consciousness is awareness and awareness is paying attention. You can’t have consciousness without energy, so the moment you start raising your awareness, you start raising your energy, and consequently moving closer to the unified field.

Phoenix Rising in Cancun

To transmute matter takes a tremendous amount of will and energy, which is why I pushed our students at both Cancun events beyond where they would normally stop. Why? Because just beyond the known is the unknown, and it’s in the unknown where the mystical, the miraculous, and the supernatural occur—and all were certainly present in Cancun. There were healings, abnormal brain scans, record-level measurements of energy in the room, and great physiological markers to prove our students were doing the work and connecting into the unified field. There is definitely something to be said for strength in numbers.

At our workshops all over the world, mystical and supernatural events are occurring in shorter amounts of time because every time we raise our energy and frequency, we experience less separation between ourselves and the unified field. In this 3-D reality in which we live, separation occurs between two points of consciousness. As people journey as a consciousness deeper into the unified field—experiencing it and unfolding into it as deeply as they can with the intention of connecting to oneness and wholeness—they close the gap between themselves as a free-willed subjective consciousness and the consciousness of the unified field. The less separation that occurs between ourselves and the unified field, the less time it takes that future to show up as an unknown in our life.

It was my intention and desire that when our students returned to their lives, they would no longer go unconscious, speak in limited ways, or live in low-frequencies or negative emotions that anchor themselves to the past. To maintain that elevated state of being, however, takes work. That means in order for your new future to continue to unfold, you can’t go unconscious—and this means every day you need to raise your energy to the frequency of that new future. Every day you have to work to overcome yourself and your environment. If you are doing the work daily, know that you’re investing in yourself and your future. As a result of your efforts, I expect miraculous things to begin to occur in your life. These may appear as opportunities, synchronicities, serendipities, and so on, but the contrary may also happen. It may appear as if things are going in the wrong direction in your life; just know that’s the old falling away. This is because every time you change your energy, you are reorganizing matter to the will of your new future, and whatever is no longer a vibrational match between your energy and your present life will begin to change. So welcome it.

The bottom line is, in order for you to meet that new future, the energy you created is going to reorganize matter accordingly in order to create the circumstances and a fertile breeding ground for that future. Sometimes it takes longer than others, and sometimes it happens instantaneously. Just keep doing the work.

The Journey To Source

I can assure you that if you keep doing the work every day, as you make the journey closer and closer to love and wholeness, you’re going to find you no longer want for yourself. You’ll want for the collective, because you feel so good you can’t help but want to give back so others feel as good as you do. This is the journey from selfishness to selflessness, and the result is we become more kind, more giving, more loving, more centered, more mindful, more conscious, more willful, and more in love with life. And that’s when your heart opens even more. Now you’re emulating the divine because you’re becoming the divine.

Every time you get past your limited self and connect with the unified field, when you return to your body you take a piece of that loving intelligence and intelligent love back with you. Eventually, as you journey closer to source energy or the unified field, you realize there is no separation or duality, but rather wholeness. You’re becoming the consciousness of every body, every one, every thing, every where, in every time. In the process you become oneness, and oneness takes care of oneness. There simply is no separation.

At the end of the second Cancun workshop, I shared with our students that the past two workshops, as well as the previous month, has changed my energy and my journey. What most people don’t know is I do the disciplines and practices with them while they are in their meditations, so it’s also an opportunity for me to retreat from my life and become conscious of myself as well. As a result, I too have been experiencing greater levels of wholeness, oneness, happiness, and satisfaction with myself and my life.

For me, there’s not much better than witnessing human transformation. I was particularly moved at the end of our two weeks in Cancun, and I want all of you to know I am honored and humbled to be a part of your journey, but I am just a facilitator for the process—each of you are the true heroes. Every time I step on and off the stage, I am truly inspired by your willingness to become your greatest potential.

I want to leave you with a final thought: what will happen to all of us if we continue to do the work for another decade, or two decades, or for the rest of our lives? The answer is easy—you will move towards mastering your energy and environment, which means your manifestations and dreams will occur in shorter amounts of time. The second thing is that each experience you manifest will cause you to dream in a way you never could have dreamed before, because each experience you have with the unified field creates a new level of awareness, and that new level of awareness creates exponential possibilities.

From each new experience of dreaming and creating, infinite possibilities come into your awareness—possibilities that you could not have seen or known without the previous experience. This is how the Creator comes to know Itself.
